    Corina Oprea

    Corina (b. 1958) lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She is a B.A. and M.A. graduate of the Arts and Design University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Her projects, conceptual but also a result of a repetitive, huge, stubborn daily work, express the frustration accumulated during the years of communism; her work has the appearance of a simple, superficial play, hiding in fact profound meanings. She had various collaborations in different art projects, both national and international.

    Private matter

    With the sudden and unexpected breakdown of communism, we witnessed the exacerbation of the means of communication. Gradually, the once so blamed concepts of “security” and “safety” began to have a positive meaning. The obsession of knowing yourself watched by the system was transformed in the habit of letting yourself be watched by an entirely different system. (Some say that the system is actually the same). It has practically become routine that things which were once considered intimate and inaccessible, be now made public, observed, copied in real time, parallel, in virtual spaces: bigger or smaller screens, electronic memories that display, upon command, not only events but also emotions, frustrations or joy. With all the controversies involved, it is a retaliation of a living, dynamic time, outdoing itself and offering everyone else the possibility to reinvent themselves.
