Mihai Zgondoiu

He was born on 5 February 1982, in Medias (Sibiu county, Romania). He graduated in Graphic Design from the Timisoara University and is presently a Ph.D. student at the National Fine Arts University in Bucharest. Mihail Zgondoiu is an active exhibitor and curator, a stance typical for many young artists. From 2006 onwards he participated in countless solo and group exhibitions both in his native Romania and in Austria.

He also works as co-curator for various projects, such as the IEEB3 (International Experimental Engraving Biennale, Bucharest, 2008), and, as of 2012, as curator and project coordinator for geamMAT Gallery, the Timisoara Art Museum, and the Bucharest ATELIER 030202 gallery.

Zgondoiu is an avid observer of cultural issues, political stereotypes but also of his own identity. Key words such as freedom, crises, communism, capitalism, identity, matrix and the critical use of social media are cornerstones of his conceptual approach. Part critical, thought-provoking and ironic, part self-referential, his mix-media projects freely blend in different mediums, paraphrase various styles, tendencies, inter-disciplinary concepts, and figurative art approaches.

The best way to sum up this multi-tasking undertaking is through the phrase ‘the artist is not an island’, the banner under which poets, writers, philosophers are brought together to shape a new discourse, broadly contextualised through publications and theatre-actions, all bearing the artist’s concept signature.

Zgondoiu’s working manner is heterogeneous and disregards norms as the artist openly opposes Western standards as much as the politically informed thinking and formal expressions reflective of local Romanian history and society. This is how he marks his very own place as an artist in a strongly market-oriented, globalising cultural society. (A. Altmann/S.Müllegger)
