Valeriu Mladin

He was born on 12 May 1958 in Lipova (Romania).  He was a student of the Fine Arts Department  of the Timisoara University and of the Ion Andreescu Fine Arts Academy in Cluj-Napoca. Mladin presently teaches at the Nicolae Grigorescu National University of Arts in Bucharest. Mladin showed his works in many solo exhibitions in Romania and Germany and participated in group exhibitions in France, Great Britain, Spain, Italy and Venezuela. In 1997 and 2010 the artist took part in the Venice Biennale. This is his first exhibition in Vienna.

Valeriu Mladin grants onlookers a central place as observers of his work. Those willing to experience the view, need look at paintings as if made of transparent glass: this is where the century-long topos of painting as a window into the world comes in handy. To search for the meaning of emblematic figures, Mladin relegates them to the background of the paintings, and thereby gradually activates all the in-built filters and increases the complexity of the message.

Mladin’s iconography and images are fundamentally ironic: this is the artist’s trademark. The painter often takes a critical artist’s look at contemporary world politics as he tackles such subjects in his paintings. Every single image structure becomes a metaphor of his vision, the creative process aimed at grasping the world, at coming to terms with it as well as at rendering his understanding of the world accessible to the others.

To inquire ever more complex subjects, the artist creates comprehensive series of paintings in which he sets an ironic distance between him, the figures and the objects which he then questions with great artistic audacity. His project 44 brings the most recent American history center stage. Complex factual truth blends in with personal experiences which heighten the intensity, of the subjectively motivated picture montage. Mladin’s paintings rely on a subtly conceived layering of meaning. Realistically painted motifs and minutely rendered figures help intensify his critique of events and facts that shape the world. (A.
